sharing with teammates: revisited

Looks like I might have to change my mind here…

I published a post about sharing with teammates recently, and my conclusion was that sharing is good. In specific, the more you give, the more you grow (and establish expertise for yourself).

Greg Marcus at the Idolbuster published a great post regarding cooperation with co-workers and cites some studies that completely sink my opinion about sharing.

The evidence indicates that people who share are more trouble for managers, more despised by co-workers and make less money…ouch!

Read what he has to say about the fox and the crow too. It’ll really get you thinking about who to share with and what to share with them.

Thoughts?

Thank you Joe for the link.

I think your second point above is key – who do you share with? If someone is a Fox (manipulator) there is no point in sharing with them unless you are explicitly getting someone in return. If someone is a Wolf, however, sharing with them will be appreciated and probably reciprocated.

    Thank you Greg.

I really like the SFW model. As you discussed in Vijay’s story, I think understanding who you should trust and how you should trust them is a critical professional skill.
